Citizens of Copenhagen can join the triumph of the skies this christmas, courtesy of environmental organisation Hopenhagen - who have created an alternate means to power the 700 lights decorating the City Hall Square's 17-metre christmas tree.
15 bicycles encircle the tree's base. Which, in an attempt to offset the estimated 9 tonnes of carbon emissions usually produced in powering the lights, will be spinning out the juice from 4 - 8pm, over the entire 12-day duration of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15), taking place in Copenhagen, from 7-18 December. Volunteers will hope to keep the tree lit, as leaders from Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Australia, Japan, Indonesia and Brazil attend the UN Climate summit.Such schemes are not new. Indeed, a year ago, the NÖ Team cranked up the joules at Tate Britain. Perhaps all those looking to mount the turbo trainer this winter can hook it up to their tree lights. Dual beneficiaries all round!
Peace on earth and mercy mild comrades.
